Pet loss gift ideas: keepsakes that hold the memories

A pet memorial gift should feel like the animal it remembers. The ones people keep are rarely the most expensive. They are the ones that sound like the dog, the cat or the horse they lost. Here are ways of thinking about it, with ideas for each.

Keepsakes you can hold

  • A paw print in clay or ink, or a nose print.
  • A lock of fur in a small frame or locket, if the owner wants one.
  • A collar or tag, mounted or kept in a box.
  • For horses: a hoof print, a piece of tail hair braid, or a halter plate.

Things to look at

  • A framed photograph, printed well.
  • A painted or drawn portrait.
  • A memorial stone or plaque for the garden.

Words

  • A letter or card with a memory only you would know.
  • A short poem or a few lines chosen with care.
  • A journal for writing down the stories while they are fresh.

A book written from the owner's own memories

A photograph shows how an animal looked. It does not keep the sounds they made, the games they never tired of, or the place they always chose to sit. A personalised book can. That is what we do at Matt & Milly.

The owner answers a few short questions that fit their animal: a dog's about walks and games, a cat's about windowsills and routines, a horse's about the field and the stable. Then there is one open box to tell us about their friend in their own words, and a few photos. We write the story and paint it in watercolour. They see a proof before they pay, with two rounds of changes.

Whatever you choose, it works best when it is specific. The little habit, the favourite chair, the exact sound. Those are what make it theirs.
